Spiritual Thirst

Spiritual Thirst

The second chapter of Wright's book "Being a Christian" is titled "Yearning for the Hidden Spring."

I have summarized what is being taught here.  Wright compares the spirituality to a spring of water. A dictator covers this spring with concrete to stop the flow and he lets his water flow via a new water pipe. This is "philosophy." Even the church has lost its spirituality due to this "philosophy." At first, people were happy with the dictatorship, but gradually they began to feel the spiritual thirst. In the midst of this, the water (spirituality) leaked out from the damaged concrete and the people began to yearn for it.

However, they yearned for a "spiritual thing" that recently gushed out such as … tarot cards, crystal gazing, astrology, and other things called "New Age" mysticism. It's the same reason why pilgrimages became popular and why there are so many books on spirituality in bookstores. People who have been thirsty for a long time will swallow anything, even if it's contaminated. If they have been without food for a long time, so they will devour anything they can get, even if it's weeds or uncooked meat. This explains how "spiritual things" can be a part of the solution to a problem and at the same time a part of the problem.

If you're thirsty or extremely hungry, I think you'll reach for something even if you know it's bad. Our spiritual thirst is the same.  Just as people yearn for righteousness, they yearn for spiritual things, which is the voice of God.  (Pastor)
