December 16th 2018 Funabashi Baptist Church Sunday Service

Scripture:Matthew1:24-25  Sermon title"He woke up"

Today is the third advent service..
The Bible passage is about Jesus' father, Joseph, last week's continuation.
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. (verses 24: 25)
An angel of the Lord appeared in a dream of Joseph who found his wife Mary was pregnant and had considered it and told him God’s message. (verses18-23)

He woke up from that dream.
Even if we dream a terrible one, when we wake up, we are relieved that "Oh, I am glad it was a dream." However, after we wake up, the real world is not a dream. we cannot keep staying in our dream.
 This couple will be suffering.
In order of residence by Roman Emperor it was necessary to take a long trip to his hometown Bethlehem with Mary to register himself.

There was no room for Mary to stay in the inn to give birth to her first baby.
It was difficult for Mary to give birth to Jesus in the livestock hut. (Luke 2:1-7)
King Herod heard that the Savior would be born soon from the wise men from the East and he was very upset and ordered to kill all the boys who were under two years old.

In order to escape the killing, the couple had to travel taking with their baby to Egypt.
Even though he received the news that King Herod passed away, his son succeeded the king, so they decided to live in Nazareth considering their safety. (Matthew chapter 2)

Life can be compared to a long trip. There are many things in our life journey.
We need to remember how God was involved in this couple.

It turns out that God gave this couple appropriate help.
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. (1Corinthians 10: 13)
They were able to avoid the killing plan of King Herod with the God 's perfect help.
When the king heard the story of the Savior from wise men, he ordered commanded them to let the king know when they knew the baby's whereabouts. King Herod secretly planned the murder the baby.
The wise men returned to their county by another road, since God had warned them in a dream not to go back to Herod.

Also, Joseph dreamed, as Herod was about to kill the child, he was told to escape to Egypt so they stayed there until the king died (Matthew chapter 2)
When the wise men came to Joseph, Mary and Jesus,

Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. (2:11) These are considered to be used for travel cost since they were poor.

Their needs were satisfied.
It is said that the birth of Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah 7: 14

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”

(Matthew 1: 23) Immanuel means "God with us" So God specifically provided help to
this couple to whom entrusted Jesus.
